Arthur Ira Garfunkel (born November 5, 1941) was a singer, poet, and actor from New York City. He was best known for his work in the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel with Paul Simon.

 

Health issues:

Garfunkel found singing difficult due to his vocal cord injury: I was terrible and terrified. I relied on Paul Simon and the audience’s affection.

Garfunkel announced in November 2010 that he had stopped smoking and was recovering from vocal paresis. Much of his 2012 tour was cancelled due to vocal issues.

In early 2013, Garfunkel said of his voice: It’s getting better. I’m almost there.

His voice had been restored by 2014, and he was touring as recently as early 2020.

 

Demise:

Art Garfunkel died of a heart attack on February 22, 2019, in Naples, Florida. His death happened only two months after the unexpected death of his co-singer, Paul Simon. 

 

Accomplishments:

Among the highlights of Garfunkel’s solo music career were one top-10 hit, three top-20 hits, 6 top-40 hits, 14 Adult Contemporary top-30 singles, five Adult Contemporary number ones, two UK number ones, and a People’s Choice Award. Garfunkel has eight Grammy Awards for his solo and collaborative work, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1990, he and Simon were both enlisted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Garfunkel 86th among the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time in 2008.

 

Education Background:

Garfunkel and Simon, who attended Queens College before dropping out of Brooklyn Law School, formed “Simon and Garfunkel” in 1963. Columbia Records released their debut album in October 1964. It was a critical and commercial flop, and the duo parted ways. The following year, producer Tom Wilson took the album’s song “The Sound of Silence,” added an electric backing, and published it as a single, reaching number one on the Billboard pop charts.

 

Childhood and Family:

Garfunkel was born in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, to Rose Pearlman and travelling salesman Jacob “Jack” Garfunkel.  Art was the middle child between two brothers, Jules and Jerome. Jacob’s parents immigrated to America at the turn of the century and settled in Manhattan. Jacob was an actor in Dayton, Ohio before pursuing a career in sales. Garfunkel is of Romanian-Jewish ancestry, with his paternal grandparents emigrating from Iași. He used to sing in the house of worship a lot when he was younger. Lou Pearlman, the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC co-founder, was his maternal cousin.

  • Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1970 for “Bridge Over Troubled Water”
  • Bridge Over Troubled Water received a Grammy Award for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) in 1970.
  • Best International Pop LP and Single, 1952-1977, Britannia Award for “Bridge Over Troubled Water” 2015 German Sustainability Award (Nachhaltigkeitspreis)

 

Garfunkel’s Relationships:

Garfunkel was married to  architect Linda Marie Grossman in Nashville on October 1, 1972, and they divorced in 1975. He had stated that he did not only not love her, but that he did not even like her.

From March 1974 until her suicide in 1979, he was romantically involved with actress and photographer Laurie Bird.

During the filming of Good to Go in late 1985, Garfunkel met former model Kathryn . They married on September 18, 1988, 

Garfunkel began experiencing vocal problems in 2010 after choking on a piece of lobster.

Later that year, Simon and Garfunkel reunited for a 13-city tour. 

 

Children:

They Have two sons: James, born on December 15, 1990, and Beau, born through a surrogate mother on October 5, 2005. James Garfunkel is now a singer as of 2021. He went by the stage name Art Garfunkel Jr. and released a tribute album to Simon & Garfunkel’s greatest hits in German.
