Robert Emmett McGrath was an American actor, singer, musician, and children’s author best known for his role as the original human character Bob Johnson on the long-running educational tv series Sesame Street.

Bob McGrath, one of Sesame Street’s original cast members and longest-running human characters, passed away at the age of 90.

McGrath died on December 4, 2022, at the age of 90, in his home in New Jersey. The McGrath family has some sad news to share, said a statement posted on Facebook by McGrath’s children on Sunday. ‘Our father, Bob McGrath, died today’.

Educational background:

McGrath was born in Ottawa, Illinois in 1932 and received his bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Michigan in 1954. After graduating from college, he was drafted into the Army and spent two years in Germany booking and performing with the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra. In 1959, he received a Masters in Voice from the Manhattan School of Music.

For four seasons, McGrath used his degree as a featured tenor on Sing Along with Mitch, a community sing-along program hosted by conductor Mitch Miller. McGrath went on to have a successful career as a recording artist in Japan.

Awards And Accomplishments:

McGrath was a regular on Telemiracle, a telethon broadcast annually on CTV outlets in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. His final regular appearance on Telemiracle was in 2015, and the show’s cast paid tribute to him. He made a special appearance in 2018. The Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, Lynda Haverstock, presented him with the Commemorative Medal for the Centennial of Saskatchewan for this work on March 3, 2006. Brad Wall, the Premier of Saskatchewan, presented him with the Saskatchewan Distinguished Service Award in 2013.
McGrath wrote numerous children’s books, including Uh Oh! I must depart! OOPS! Please excuse my interruption!
In 1995, he received a grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award.
Sing Me a Story by McGrath was nominated for children’s album of the year at the 7th Annual Independent Music Awards.
On April 10, 2010, he became the first recipient of the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club Lifetime Achievement Award. McGrath also served as master of ceremonies during the Glee Club’s 150th anniversary celebration weekend.

His mother registered him in the Roxy Theater’s amateur program, where he placed second. He went to Marquette High School and graduated from there.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting estimates that 74 million Americans have “graduated” from the show after watching at least one episode. His death sparked a massive online outpouring of condolences from friends and show fans.

Sesame Workshop issued a statement in memory of the ‘beloved member of the Sesame Street family for over 50 years’.

McGrath joined Loretta Long, Matt Robinson, and Will Lee as the first human cast members of Sesame Street in 1969. McGrath played friendly neighbourhood music teacher Bob Johnson for more than four decades.

Holly Robinson Peete, whose father Matt Robinson played science teacher Gordon and died in 2002, paid tribute to McGrath by sharing a scene she and her brother filmed with him when they were kids.
